This past weekend and today I had the privilege of working the opening of the National Museum of African-American History and Culture, beginning with covering the Freedom Sounds Community Celebration on Saturday, September 24th and concluding today with visiting the museum with the initial timed-passes given out free of charge by the museum.

When I first arrived I checked in with media and was directed to the stage area. There, I called my contact and was let backstage where I met Ms. Deborah. Ms. Deborah was working security and we began to have a warm conversation in which I revealed to her that I was the first Chaplain Contractor in the history of the United States of America to specialize in the War on Drugs and Poverty.

Growing up I was always taught that many are called, but few are chosen.  That is how I feel about my experience arriving at Wesley Theological Seminary, fully immersed in the Washington Theological Consortium.  I believe we chose each other once I was finally willing to accept the life that has been chosen for me. As I’ve found myself navigating the War on Drugs and Poverty it has become more and more apparent to me that I’ve been chosen to play a key role for my generation. All my life my mother has been saying, “God has a plan for you,” and when I told her I’m in seminary, she said, “You finally accepted the calling.”

Most recently, while dealing with the reoccurring cycle of displacement our society refers to as homelessness, I began to be chosen by many of the participants at the day-shelter I frequented, named The Mckenna Center. We were all in the struggle together. I was often the youngest and most academically schooled. In our daily 11am meetings it was brought up on several occasions that the homeless community needed a representative and it needed to come from within the homeless community. I went straight from “homeless” to seminary. Signs don’t get much louder or blatant than that. The only life that aligned with what I was doing on a day-to-day was ministry. It gave me a way out besides selling drugs, stealing or the military since the 
petty charges on my record were preventing me from being employed--causing significant disruption to my life and credibility.  It's amazing how much people associate credibility and stability to employment, to the point where they will withhold compensation for work just to prove a point--adding more insult to injury. People have become dependent on an outdated system that prioritizes its funding on destruction--investing more in prisons and war than any other nation in the world, almost 5 times as much as any other nation. As Dean Robert Martin mentioned in Chapel at Wesley Main Campus on Tuesday, September 6th, 2016, a Pew Research study from 2012 found that one third of young adults are not affiliated with a religion and are 32 percent more likely than other groups to identify as non-affiliated (PewResearch.org). I tend to attract this demographic. When Mauri Bishop of the Institute for Community Engagement at Wesley Downtown told me that as an artist I could fuse my secular and faith-based worlds together at Wesley I viewed that as confirmation. This seems to present me with a fun challenge. I’m not very religious. I’m not fond of tradition. I went to an HBCU and I came straight from street life to seminary. This background although it may seem like it presents challenges has actually prepared me to be unapologeticaly myself. I am very firm in who I am and very open to all beliefs. This has often times gotten me chastised in Jesus name as they say we all need to be willing to bare our cross. I was told by “church leaders” that working for the church wasn’t considered a job. Now I’m in graduate school for that as my profession. Everything happens for a reason.

Allow me to reintroduce myself. The name on my birth certificate is John Harris III. I am the grandson of John Harris and the son of John Harris. My dad never uses junior, but I always use III. Growing up in the church, everyone called me Tre' so I consider that my real name. The relative who named me Tre' died the day I received my most recent birth certificate. His name was D(OG). He spent the first 20 years of my life in prison serving a life sentence.

Growing up in an urban church based on the south-side of Chicago, named Christian Faith Bible Church is how I was introduced to the separation of Church & State. I was the original church baby of the church and I didn't start telling people my name was John until I started going to school. Everyone outside of church and family called me John, but church and family called me Tre'. Some of my cousins didn't even know John was my government name.

I accepted the concept of Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior at the age of 6 and was told that John is the disciple that Jesus loved. Hearing that constantly etched that concept into my mind from a very young age. John was the one who stayed with Mary and supported Jesus until the end while all the other disciples denied Jesus on the cross. 

Now, 20 years later, I find myself being chosen to minister on a global scale, spreading the gospel to love one another more than we love money and materialism. Ministering this concept and practicing what I preach has brought me to Wesley Theological Seminary as a part of the Washington Theological Consortium--a community of theological schools and partners from diverse traditions that pursue ecumenical dialogue, interfaith understanding, and educational collaboration to better equip clergy and laity for the ministry of the Church in a diverse society. Wesley is the only school I have encountered that placed more value on my work and spiritual calling than on academics, finances and inflated achievement.

We use Mary J in my urban ministry to help people with meditation in Sabbath observation. In today's world, many times the state criminalizes Mary, like how the patriarchal church structure of society often times oppresses the woman in One Nation Under God. However, in history, we find that Moses, who came before Jesus and Mary, discovered God in the form of "I Am" as he observed life through the burning bush(Exodus 20:20-26). Moses helped to free the people of Israel from the oppression of Egypt, giving them new laws we call commandments which derive from the 42 Laws of MA'AT. Maat or Ma'at was the ancient Egyptian concept of truth, balance, order, harmony, law, morality, and justice. Maat was also personified as a goddess regulating the stars, seasons, and the actions of both mortals and the deities, who set the order of the universe from chaos at the moment of creation.(Google.com). 

It is my hope that through my work I can bring peace among people of all cultures, races, creeds and denominations waging chaotic wars in both physical and spiritual realms. We all eat and drink. We all rest and breathe. For we know in our own hearts the truth and peace that we desire as a common people. Through fellowship we can come to common understandings that will not judge and chastise for "Jesus sake" but rather love and heal for the sake of all human beings undergoing the spiritual experience. I was taught the opposite of hate is not love, but rather indifference. It's to have no concern or empathy for unfortunate circumstances that we may observe or cause both directly and indirectly. I've experienced this so often. People really enjoy throwing that "love" word around combined with mute actions, especially in churches. Can I get an "amen?" (The the church-goers say "amen" and a couple of hypocrites probably yell out "hallelujah")

Actions speak louder than words so if you bypass your neighbor who is without food, water, shelter, or love then praise a Lord you have never seen, then you worship the idea of self-righteousness, not Go(o)d. We can only love others to the extent that we are capable of loving ourselves. Love of others begins with love of self.


We often use the heart as a metaphor for love. The heart is a muscle. It must be exercised. In the United States of America, especially in the Black community, we have a heart disease epidemic. People attempt to blame it on lots of thing-- poor diet, stress,lack of exercise and more. The truth of the matter is, people get heart disease because they do not know how to love themselves properly. If they loved themselves properly, they would feed themselves properly and make proper use of their temple. The church is in the heart. If the heart is diseased, then so is the church. If the church is diseased then so are its people, in "One Nation Under God."

I believe heart disease is a spiritual disorder that results as a bi-product of greed. Excess consumption is the norm in the United States of America. It's called consumerism. United States citizens are being conditioned to kill themselves slowly through ads in televisions and music that promote excess drug and alcohol use. People are conditioned in school to be everyone but who they are. "Humble yourself" is what they say, as if being confident is wrong. Then they go to the doctors to get treatments instead of cures, because after all, everyone has to make money.

It always comes back to the money. If the doctor cures you, then (s)he can't make money. When people have more money than they need, but not much love for themselves, they tend to use money to overcompensate and over-consume. This results in health issues, primarily heart disease. As a result of heart disease, we have many other shortcomings. A people unable to love themselves cannot love their neighbors or fellow citizens. We have displaced people we refer to as homeless because they have nowhere to rest their hearts. Home is where the heart is. People choose money over love. The love of money is the root of all evil. Maybe that's why finances are the number one reason for divorce.

I've witnessed profits run nonprofits for privileged workers to profit and be glorified from oppression. They brand the sick and shut-in with casting. Our "Democratic Republic Land of The Free" operates with a casting structure consisting of homeless, working poor, working class, middle class, upper middle class, rich, and the 1%. The violence and abuse is more covert, spiritual, verbal and financial instead of the more overt violent burning of brands and shackles experienced by our ancestors. They then profit off of this systematic structure leaving the poor in vulnerable positions in order to keep their stable jobs and maintain their devilish beliefs to write-off on their taxes out of self-righteous greed and boast about such toxic charity at conferences, conventions, fundraisers and church services.

Oppression is used as a talking point. Poverty pimping is considered an honorable profession. People get paid 6 figures to attend conferences to talk about the homeless and economically disadvantaged as they eat to get sleepy and drink to get drunk. Workers and activists get burned, terminated, blackballed, discredited and assassinated for their "idealism" as if ending homelessness isn't ideal. There are 6 empty homes for each homeless person, thus homelessness is an issue of moral poverty that consumes a rich nation more so than its flawed economics.


Fox Business estimates, there are 18.9 million vacant homes across the country. 3.5 million people without homes; 18.9 million homes without residents.(HuffingtonPost.com)

It's become customary to worship false idols and work for the glorification of such idols. People will pay hundreds of dollars to worship manufactured celebrities promoting violence, drugs money and sex while overindulging in food and drink then choose to OPt out of investing in the development of future generations with either time nor money.

They will instead use their words and their knowledge of Western versions of The Bible and academics to debate over problems in communities they refuse to occupy or evangelize to, labeling its inhabitants as bad in order to inflate their own self-righteous egos "in the name of Jesus." Many preachers and self-proclaimed ministers use praise soundbites to amplify news cycles about traumatic events to appeal to the vulnerable and gullible in order to gain political capital and false power for photo OPPs with OPPressors. They praise God to make themselves feel good. It's their drug. It's their addiction. The moment it no longer makes them feel good or comfortable, they will reject it in "the name of Jesus" and destroy anything in their path, just like addicts. The letter J wasn't even invented until 400-500 years ago. Many "missionaries" even used The Bible to indoctrinate slaves. Worshiping Christ himself as an idol is actually against the practices of The Bible.

In the spiritual realm of warfare people will attempt to destroy the spirits of those working 4 good in order to attempt to legitimize and validate their own worship of false idols. Self-righteousness is often times falsely portrayed as authoritative success in the name of the Lord.

For Jesus sake, why do so many of the self-proclaimed saints of the church refuse to fellowship with the sick and shut-in? Why do they instead choose to boast about their few good works on the stage and alter while turning away their brothers and sisters in Christ to condemnation when no one is looking? Why do they over-consume in God's house to enable their greed? Why do churches put $4 Billion dollars into banks each Monday then promote politicians upholding a system they claim destroys their communities? This is hypocritical.

You’re witnessing it. Right now.
I want you to remember this. Be here. In this moment.
This everything, the everything of right now

The background of suspense
The dry mouth and the lump in your throat
The disorientation from realizing that forever was just fiction.
Remember this. Own this moment. Feel it. Never let it go.
Because this moment is your life And this moment is everything.

Love is a lot more than romantic relationships and three word phrases. You can’t control how you feel, only what you do. Life can be full of lots of love and recovery or fear of discovery. As we walk, sometimes we trip; sometimes we fall and feel broken. In the midst of vulnerability and adversity we find our own truth. We can either decide to acknowledge it, ignore it or lie about it. Either way, we’re exposed to it. We can’t crawl out of fear of standing up to that which has crippled us, yet still expect to reach unprecedented heights. Sometimes it’s easier to see the truth about ourselves in the eyes of others and receive support for that which we could not see before, but if you can’t find the courage to love the person you see in the reflection of another’s pupil, you can never expect to fully love the person whose eyes are staring back at you. If you can find the strength, however, to rise from the broken glass of a past mirror and love the new and improved you, do so with all you have to offer. Everything will be fine. Love of others is just as much about love of self as anything else.
Take the risks necessary to be happy.

Evolution of Love: Entry #22

Society breeds lives that turn to dust.
Some fertilize the future
While others soil the hearts they leave behind
Adulterating love and creating chronic pain
Where hearts cry in the cold, freeze over, and then thaw out in fiery rage
Or harden in a cold dark pit where days have no sun,
Hope has no meaning,
And love has no family.

Streams of sorrow leave rivers of love dry
Releasing dark, red streams that run to the parts
Of hell that surround us and confound us
These streams are released by the gun chamber
Of a boy whose tear ducts have dried
But have been replaced by tattoos and bloodied hands
That cook the product that burns the soul he sells
Because rent is overdue and his little brother and sisters need to go to school.
These streams are released by the girl whose once innocent inside
Is penetrated through a hole that she hopes leads to the hole left in her heart.
By an obsolete sperm donor unwilling to play his part,
One she replaces with a story of backhands, bruises, black eyes, and 911 recordings
The death of two angels-- A soul lost, holding precious potential she felt too worthy of aborting.
Love was the treasure but it had been buried
Below a deep dark sea full of waves of silent tears
That rise with the tide and subside
As life goes on and the toxic sea provides the ride for the current
But drifts away from the dust of what could have been a beach
That could have fertilized palm trees but instead never sees paradise.
It only carries the pollution it treasures
Because there it seems.... Hope has no meaning
And love has no family.

​Love needs community. It needs culture, education, expression, purity, hope, understanding, and communication. People need to feel comfortable with the truth coming to light. People have to express life. They need freedom and honesty between generations. Love needs perspective. People just need to feel the freedom to be who they are. They need art that expresses truth and shines light where the sun doesn’t seem to shine. Love needs for us all to grow together

The Black perspective is dark, but still abundant in its art expressed in foul ways through the haze of red eyes high but steady chasing the forsaken thought processes of a caveman, primitive in its arrangement. If weak, a foundation turns to rubble,

Because when weak thoughts meet weak minds a fight’s lost by both sides, but neither side knows why, so denial and conflict don’t subside.

But the home that is the building does, the walls floor and the ceiling do,
until an entire generation forget exactly what the building was.
What the fight was for
Why Martin and Malcolm are gone
Why “Change Gon’ Come” and “Fight the Power” were hit songs.

I’m frustrated by the nonsense got a guilty conscience
I see I have this talent, but I how do I share its contents.
I’m irritated by dissonance by false vigilance
thinking you’re saving souls by preaching with conviction
based on false pretenses.

You say it’s a lost generation, but you were the guides.
You gave us no insight on a path that was so bright
Now you’re mad and uptight because gimics make millions
off of bullsh*t and sound bites.

The one’s before you had options that they learned to toss.
Life was pitched to you, but you didn’t know how to hand off.
Now the ball’s in our hands, even though you fumbled the plan
You never took the time to teach a young boy to be a man
Unless you’re talkin’ about “f*ckin’ hoes” and not having or A or B Plan.
So girls get pregnant, and the boys stay reckless
because the construct of an entire culture has now become defective

​There’s a lack of connection between the leaders of the past and the present
simply because they can’t see that their current power is becoming evanescent.
You forgot a part of the message.
You never took the time to teach the boy anything but how not to cry,
but inside he still does, symbolizing the cries of an entire generation
still learning how to love.

Hey Happy, it’s been a while. I seem to neglect you for my little friend, Depressed. I walk through the whistles of the wind thinking of its harsh coldness instead of its subtle caress. I always speak of you to my other friend, wondering why I can’t seem to get along with you too well. I fail to embrace and share my talents with you, see you as a hindrance even when it is you I pursue. Smiles come and go with the blowing of the smoke and the drops of different drinks as I contemplate why it hurts so bad to think. Think about you... Think about us... All this fuss about down time, consequences and repercussions, preaching of passion, purpose, and you... Happy... I don’t know why sometimes I feel like I miss you. You are always here. I just wish you cared about me the same way I care about you. Or maybe you do, but in this twisted world I create for myself, you want no part, so you drift away with each exhale from the toxins of the cigar. But Happy, I like you. Do you like me? I’m no longer too shy to ask. So if you do, can you please let me know?

For better or for worse, for sicker or for poorer, because my worst with you is so much better than my best with Depressed. So if you can please love me again Take me back and I’ll never mistreat you. I just want to be, but I don’t want to be without you. I just want us to be one and the same. The moment you stop chasing what you love, your fears have the chance to catch up to you. Don’t be afraid to live the life you love. I’m a writer. That’s what I do. It’s who I am. I love it. I may not always like to write, but I damn sure love writing. Life is about love. Love is about living. Fear is about death, but death should never be about fear, but instead also about living. Fear thrives in silence. Love flourishes in expression. Many life lessons come in the form of confessions. We come out of our mothers’ wombs crying the air of the world as we become acclimated to a new realm where we are no longer protected. It is a realm where we spend entire lifetimes searching for meaning while still matriculating to its ending. Along this journey, we find ourselves crying the air of a cruel world that we never completely adjust to. The harsh atmosphere of the earth never becomes less harsh to breathe from the womb to the tomb. In fact, the innocence of an infant protects it from the chronic pain of fear. The only things that matter to an infant are its basic survival needs along with the intangible need to be loved. As we grow from infant all the way to adult, however, those needs never change. What changes are our wants and what must be done and sacrificed to acquire those needs.

A life that starts off as simple as, “Smile -> Cry -> Eat -> Be loved -> Go to sleep -> Repeat” becomes jaded with the scars from mistakes and painful memories. It gets so difficult sometimes that many try to return to a mother’s womb in which they can no longer fit. Some abandon it completely, and others provoke others to do it for them. The world is scary and nothing will go as planned. We start off so eager, trying to run so fast but eventually we are met by obstacles. Upon meeting these obstacles, it is as if we return back to infant form. Some choose to cry and remain there. Others may cry but still continue the journey back to adulthood. Never let fear dictate what you must do to acquire your needs. For many people these needs are basic survival needs. For others it is that elusive feeling to be loved that never leaves but instead begins to feel more distant as hearts become numb. Regardless of the need, be honest with yourself. Scream at yourself if you have to. Be open. Trust in yourself and allow yourself to trust the people who give themselves selflessly to you. Take chances. Big girls and big boys cry too, but sometimes it seems as if little boys and little girls don’t cry as long.  When you fall never stay down for too long. Never let fear stomp you and stand on you while you cry lying on the ground. The weight of fear is self- inflicted and is lifted whenever you finally decide to stand. Finally, once you find yourself standing, walking, and then running strong again, don’t forget about the people who have fallen and long for help. Don’t ignore the people deprived of their basic needs---food, water, shelter and love. You may be just one obstacle away yourself and the one person you made smile during their tough time could shine their light on you so that you all can walk together again. Embrace your story. You can’t erase your past, but you can use it to live an inspirational life written in the form of compassionate actions. It takes a lot of strength to stand with the weight of the world on your shoulders. It takes courage to step into the darkness that consumes you and to speak after feeling your voice has been stripped from you; however, that strength and that courage coupled with your story give you power. Don’t run or hide from it. The cries of experience have more power than the silence of fear. Your tears could be what someone needs to feel clean again. If you decide to sit in silence in the dark, you may never know who else is sitting in the room with you. You have the power to be someone’s North Star. Shine accordingly. If not you, who? You are needed. You are valuable. Never forget that. Never.
