According to the United States ConstitutionThe 13th Amendment to the Constitution declared that "Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction." Formally abolishing slavery in the United States, the 13th Amendment was passed by the Congress on January 31, 1865, and ratified by the states on December 6, 1865.
I'm waking up, I feel it in my bones. Enough to make my system blow. Welcome to the new age" ~ Imagine Dragons
On September 11, 2015, on my way to see Congressman John Lewis for a dinner about diversity in government, I was faced with a dilemma. See, myself, like the majority of the United States and Global population have had issues with poverty. On this date in particular, I had NO money, but I wanted to discuss with the Congressman the $15M Request for Quote Set-Aside I had received for Army Community Service. It was the opportunity of a lifetime, especially for a 25 year old Black man in the United States, a country built on the free labor of my ancestors. The RFQ came out of Congressman Lewis's jurisdiction in Peachtree, GA and Rep. Lewis was a pioneer of the Civil Rights movement. I wanted to pay homage and see how I could be of service to my country and show how much I had grown since we last met.
But I'm an artist, and I'm sensitive about my sh*t (shoutout to Ms. Badu) so I gave a show for the police body camera his partner was wearing, which I had advocated for on the streets and with law enforcement officers. Then I gave a show at the Central Processing Unit where I was detained and served for FREE as a Chaplain to offenders of the law in a room for 20 participants (the same amount for my RFQ Set-Aside.) then represented myself to the Commissioner and was released without having to post bail. I didn't try to call an attorney nor did I want one appointed to me since I know that my greatest tools against the law are knowledge & art. I attempted to call De'Angelo Taylor, CEO of SuperDope Nation where I'm a Field Representative, but they wouldn't let my call go through. I was not convicted of any crime yet I was criminalized, I rendered my services for free and was labeled a convict instead of a slave, since history has stigmatized that word so much.
See you. Be you. Do more.
